DERIVATION. 

See Uxela (1) and Uxacona. Here the name is again adjectival, presumably corresponding to British *Uxelon neuter; hence 'high (place)' or perhaps 'noble (place)'. In the endings, Ptolemy is more likely to be right than Ravenna; the latter's form coul have arisen via *Uxelo, oblique case, with final -o miscopied as -a, as often; but it is always possible that the Cosmographer misread from a map the name of an unrecorded river Uxela, on which the fort Uxelum may have stood.

Identification. Perhaps the Roman fort at Ward Law, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire".
