SOURCE

- Ptolemy II, 3, 4: Oueroubioun akron ( = VIRVEDRUM PROMONTORIUM) vars. Beroubioun- ( = BERUBIUM), etc.

Note that here, and for Tarvedu(nu)m and Verubium, Ptolemy exceptionally transmits the termination as -um (not -on).

DERIVATION. Holder III. 249 marked the name 'Pictish', but went on to list what are evidently related names of fully Celtic kind, especially Verubius > Verebbio (Italy). The name might contain *ueru- 'broad', which some have seen in Verulamium, as proposed by Holder; but since the existence of this in Celtic seems doubtful, it is better to retain the suggestion of Watson CPNS 36-37, that the name is Ver-ub-ium, from British *uer-, intensive prefix (see VERLUCIO), together with an element *ub- later represented by Irish ubh 'point'; with the common *-io- suffix. Hence 'pointed cape'. Watson draws attention to the Ubii pcople of the Rhineland.

IDENTIFICATION. Noss Head, Caithness.
