Définition : ville d'Angleterre; comté de Hampshire;  à 28 km nord-est de Salisbury;

Population : 4200 hab. en 1863;

Le point rouge a été placé par JC Even, de façon conjecturale, au carrefour de la route de Venta / Winchester à Cunetio / Mildenhall, et de Sorviodunum / Old-Sarum à Calleva / Silchester, 

au regard des indications de Rivet & Smith.

Étymologies : 

a) Rivet & Smith, p 389 :

- Ravenna, 10621 : LEUCOMAGNO; variantes LEUCU MAGNO, LEUCU MAGNA.

DERIVATION. For the first element, see LEUCA ; for the second (in Ravenna with scribal assimilation to Latin magnus; cf. Noviomagus), see CAESAROMAGUS. 

Given the diversity of senses of British *leuco-, the name might be 'clear plain' (i.e. clear of trees and scrub) or 'bright plain, white plain' (i.e. chalky). Williams, though interpreting 'clear plain', provides an analogy for the second sense by mentioning Welsh Gwynfa < *Vindo-mag 'white plain, white place'.

IDENTIFICATION. As R&C noted, from its position in the Ravenna list (and since Winchester is not in question) this should lie near Andover, and the discovery of buildings associated with the Roman road junction at East Anton, Hampshire (SU 3747), now suggests a likely place.

explication : clear plain, bright plain, white plain. Rapports pouvant être établis avec le gallois Gwynfa < *Vindo-mag = plaine blanche, endroit sacré.
