Selon l'indication de la Notitia, Condercum a reçu en garnison, à la fin du IVè siècle, la Première aile de cavalerie asturienne. (Fin IVè siècle, le forteresse reçoit en garnison la Ala I Asturum, première aile de cavalerie asturienne, sous les ordres d"un préfet de cavalerie.)

DERIVATION. The name is Celtic *com 'with' plus a verb root which Holder I.1266 gives as *derc- *derco- 'to see', in a long entry having many ramifications. Among these a form very close to Condercum is cited in Old Irish, condercar 'conspicitur', i.e. 'look round'. Dottin LG 251 cites *derco- in Gaulish names, Irish derc 'eye' and Greek derkomai as related. Among personal names are Derco and Derceia, and among place-names possibly a Dercenna river in Iberia, cited by Martial I, XLIX,17.

The sense of the name is thus something like '(place for) looking around', '(place with a) wide view'. R&C note that Benwell 'overlooks its neighbourhood for miles in every direction'. The sense 'place with afine outlook' and discussion of the sense 'fine, noble' for the root by Williams seems slightly erroneous, in that this sense is a figurative extension of the basic one and is not warranted here.

IDENTIFICATION. The roman fort at Benwell, Northumberland (NZ 2164), whose third-century garrison was the Ala I Asturum (RIB 1334, 1337).
