DERIVATION. For locative -is, see ANICETIS. Jackson in Britannia, I (1970), 81, largely agrees with Williams in seeing here a British *vertero- meaning 'upper part, summit', built up from *uer- (see VERLUCIO) and a contrastive-comparative formant *-tero (as in Latin alter, English either), found also in the second part of rhacter (Welsh 'summit'). This has given a Welsh word gwarther 'summit' recorded in medieval verse and two personal names cited by Williams. Cognate formations are Sanskrit vartra 'dyke, dam' and German Werder 'embankment'. There seem to be no analogues in ancient toponymy elsewhere. The name is not related to that of the Verturiones of Scotland as was suggested by Holder, Rhys and Watson.

B. Brough Castle :  il s'agit ici d'un doublet, Brough étant issu du Vieil-Anglais * burgh = forteresse + latin castellum = forteresse. Le nom se réfère bien entendu à l'ancien camp romain, sur la route de York à Carlisle.
