Étymologie
:
A. Alauna : * Rivet & Smith, p. 245 : Sources : - Ptolémée, II,3,7 : Alauna ( = Alauna), a polis of the (V)otadini; - Ravenna, 10746 : Alauna. Derivation : We can be certain of this Alauna of Ravenna 10746 bescause it stands next-but-one to Bremenium at 10745; both Alauna and Bremenium are given as poleis of the (V)otadini by Ptolemy II,3,7. For the name, see Alauna (rivière). Identification : Probably the Roman fort at Low Learchild, Northumberland, near the river Aln. Ptolemy's name is omitted from many MSS and altgough his tribal attribution to the Votadini is correct, his misplacing of it suggests that it may be no more than a confused repetition of our Alauna (7 = Ardoch)". ***** B.
