A. CALCARIA

* Rivet & Smith, Place-Names of Roman Britain, p 288-289 :

- Itinéraire d'Antonin, 4685 (Iter II) : CALCARIA

- Ravenna , 1077 ( = R&C 125) : PAMPOCALIA.

"R&C note that Ravenna's form is 'a recognisable conflation of CAMBODUNUM and CALCARIA', adjacent names presumably misread from a map.

DERIVATION. The name is the Latin for 'lime-works', 'limestone quarries' (calx 'chalk, lime'). There was another Calcaria > Calas (Var, France), and another presumed in Germania Inferior (Whatmough DAG 922). The name survived for a time within the British Kingdom of Elmet, with Anglo-Saxon adjustments, as recorded by Bede IV, 23 : secessit ad civitatem Calcariam, quae a gent Anglorum Kaelcacaestir appellatur.

IDENTIFICATION. The Roman settlement at Tadcaster, Yorkshire (SE 4843). Its position in AI rules out the suggestion of Ekwall (EPN, s.v. Kelk) that Kelk is meant, since this lies far away in the East Riding (TA 1058).

Note. For the importance of Bede's référence, see CAMBODUNUM.

B. TADCASTER, selon Eilert Ekwall :

- Tada 1066 ASC; Tatecastre DB, 1227 FF; Tathecastre c 1150 BM; Tadecastre 1212 RBE, 1218 FF.

" This form Tada in ASC is difficult to judge".
