Histoire; Archéologie : 

Selon la carte établie par Ordnance Survey, il semble nettement que Alauna / Ardoch se trouve sur le territoire de la cité bretonne des Venicones. 

Rivet et Smith rapportent un propos de Ptolémée : "Ptolemy lists as polis of the D(u)mnonii in Scotland Colania, Vindogara, Coria, Alauna, Lindum and Victoria ..." 

En fait, les Dumnonii sont installés au sud de l'isthme Forth / Clyde, c'est à dire par la suite au sud du Mur d'Antonin, alors que les Venicones sont installés au nord est de cet isthme et de ce mur, sur la rive nord du Firth of Forth.

Quoi qu'il en soit, le fort d'Alauna / Ardoch correspond à l'une des positions que les historiens et archéologues qualifient de "forts d'Agricola", car c'est sous ce général-gouverneur romain de la Bretagne que cette contrée a été attaquée est soumise en 84 après J-C. 

L'évacuation a été faite sous Hadrien, même s'il est permis de penser que le site a pu être réinvesti par les Romains au gré des avancées et des reculs en ce secteur.

Étymologie : 

- A) Pour ALAUNA : 

* Rivet & Smith, p. 245 : 

- Ptolémée, II,3,7 : Alauna (= ALAUNA), "a polis of the D(u)mnonii'.

- Ravenna, 107₅₅ : Litana; variante Licana.

Ravenna's name has not previously been associated with Ptolemy's. R&C take it literally and give it an etymology, by no means unreasonably, based on British *litano- ' broad'. It is also possible that the name is merely a part of Litanomagus (Ravenna 108,6), apparently north of the Antonine Wall; such fragmentation is not rare in this text. However, identity with Ptolemy's Alauna is nearly certain. The reason is partly textual, in that Alauna (1) in Ravenna 106,14 has a variant Alatina, and that what we take to be *Alaunocelum at 107,34 is Alitacenon in the text; within this kind of miscopying emendation of Litana to Alauna is no problem. There is also a sound reason within the ordering of material by Ptolemy and the Cosmographer. Ptolemy lists as poleis of the D(u)mnonii in Scotland Colania, Vindogara, Coria, Alauna, Lindum and Victoria, and it can be shown that Ravenna (with adjustments) lists all of these, naturally enough, since both depended ultimately on the same map source.
