A. TAMEIA :

Ravenna's form has not hitherto been equated with Ptolemy's, but as explained in Chapter v, there is some logic in supposing that a Ptolemy N. British name should be sought in Ravenna if it is not immediately apparent in the text, and the placing of Tagea in the Cosmography suits the equation with Ptolemy well enough. Williams took Tagea literally and derived it from *tegesa 'houses' (Welsh tai).

DERIVATION. This fort-name is in essence that of a river, for which see the root *tam- under TAMARUS; it has *-eia suffix as in ARBEIA.

IDENTIFICATION. Probably the Roman fort at Cardean, Angus (NO 2846).
