Étymologie
:
a). CORIA. * Rivet & Smith, page 320 : SOURCES : - Ptolémée, II,3,7 : Kouria ( = CURIA), une ville des (V)otadini; variante : Koria ( = CORIA), - Ravenna, 10741 : CORITIOTAR. R&C thought that Ravenna's corrupt form could conceal Coria plus the name of the Votadini. We agree, against Dillemann (p. 69) who associates the Corie Lopocarium of Ravenna with the present name (see our *CORIOSOPITUM). What Ravenna' s form was originally it is hard to say. The -a of Coria was evidently omitted, and -ti- must represent the initial V- of Votadini, the ending was presumably abbreviated Votad on the map-source, miscopied as *Votar in the first instance. DERIVATION. See CORIA-1. IDENTIFICATION. Probably the Roman fort at Inveresk, Midlothian (NT 3472), the name being transferred from a native meeting-place which it controlled (in this case perhaps Arthur's Seat, 4 miles to the west). ------------------ Propositions étymologiques de ces auteurs : voir la racine de Coriosopitum = Corchester / Corbridge. ******* b). INVERESK : - Francis H. Groome : Inveresk (Gael. inbhir-uisge, `confluence of the water'), * JC. Even : Inver- < gael. inbhear = embouchure, rive, confluent + -Esk < *iska = générique de nom de rivière. |
