A. Alabum : selon Rivet & Smith, Place-names of Roman Britain, p 242 : 

- Ravenna, 106₂₆ : ALABUM.

DERIVATION. One cannot improve upon Williams : 'Presumably a latinised form of British *alabon, neuter. Two Welsh words may be derived from such a form: (I) alaf "herd, cattle; wealth"; (2) alafon, in the context alafon dwyfron . . . probably the breastbone,. . . a possible root is *alebh, *alobh, seen in Greek lofos "ridge, crest; cockscomb".' Williams goes on to prefer the second possibility; the name would be simply 'hill, crest'. One may compare Ptolemy's 'Alauwna (I, 6, 66) — Allabone AI 444,1 (> Alagon, Zaragoza, Spain), a settlement of the Vascones, and Ptolemy's 'Alaba (11, 6, 57) with its Alabanenses people of Pliny NH III, 25, a settlement of the Celtiberi at an unknown place in Hispania Tarraconensis.

IDENTIFICATION. Probably the Roman fort at Llanfair-ar-bryn, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire (SN 7735).
